BSNL is going to launch 5G non-standalone (NSA) technology along with launching its 4G service in the country ahead of Independence Day on August 15. At least such an indication came from the speech of Prince Upadhyay, a key official of C-DOT, the Center for Development of Telematics. A recent PTI report reported that Upadhyay claims that BSNL may soon launch its 5G non-standalone technology to compete with private telcos. Needless to say, Upadhyay’s statement has created a buzz among BSNL fans.

BSNL’s 4G service will be started on 15th August as per the wish of the Prime Minister

Meanwhile, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director PK Purbar recently mentioned that they are looking to officially launch 4G on August 15 to honor the wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the same day, private telecom operators are also set to launch the next generation 5G technology in the country.

It is noteworthy that the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology again filed a special petition on behalf of BSNL regarding 5G. The committee claimed that the government cannot discriminate against BSNL in the 5G spectrum auction.

State-owned BSNL recently completed its 4G trial with the help of TCS or Tata Consultancy Services. In such a situation, the telco has got C-DOT as a technical assistant.

Despite the success of the 4G trial, BSNL is currently looking at some important decisions of the government. Actually, at present, the central government wants to merge BSNL with Bharat Broadband Corporation Limited or BBNL. Also, for some time now they are contemplating to merge BSNL-MTNL so that the common employees of BSNL have strong objection.

When will BSNL order 4G gear?

According to Union Minister of Information and Communications Ashwini Vaishnav, BSNL is expected to place the order for the required 4G gear in April (2022). However, we are of the opinion that if it is unnecessarily late, it will be a hindrance to the upgradation of the Telco network.
