None of us is unaware of the global public frenzy focused on the next generation of networks, 5G. However, this time around, the attraction for 5G has increased so much that for the first time in January, the global sales of 5G smartphones overtook the sales of 4G handsets! yea al that sounds so crap to me it seems bt isn’t even for me. Such shocking information has come to the fore in a recent report by market research firm Counterpoint Research. In China, 5G penetration accounts for 64% (percentage of total mobile connection share) as the main reason for this phenomenon. 5G smartphone penetration in North America and Western Europe at 63 percent and 6 percent respectively is cited as the main driving force for this tremendous growth.

According to Counterpoint Research’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker report, 5G-enabled smartphone sales worldwide reached 51 percent in January 2022, surpassing 4G smartphone sales for the first time, setting an incredible record. As I said earlier, China is largely responsible for this record. With the advent of many affordable 5G smartphones made with the help of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) along with the tireless efforts of Chinese telecom operators focused on 5G technology, the trend among buyers to buy these sets has increased significantly.

Moreover, the world-renowned tech giant Apple has a strong trend of attractive designs and effective features packed with iPhone buyers across the globe. So when the company rolled out the iPhone 12 series with 5G technology, those phones sold out all over the world, mainly in North America and Western Europe. Also, the iPhone 13 series, launched in 2021, is currently very popular among users. As a result, buyers are also showing great interest in buying the models of this series. According to Counterpoint, these regions play a significant role in selling 5G smartphones around the world. These places have many users who on an average every four years exchange old iPhone models and buy new models. As a result, 5G smartphones have been sold across the world, the report said.

Counterpoint’s report also attributed the increase in sales of 5G smartphones to affordable chipsets provided by companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. 5G Android smartphones are now available in the market at very affordable prices and a large number of buyers are able to buy these phones. The report also claimed that the prices of these phones have come down significantly in January. According to the report, the price of Android 5G phones ranges from Rs 250 to Rs 400 (approximately Rs 18,900 to Rs. So this phenomenon can be considered as one of the main reasons for selling a lot of 5G phones.

Apart from all this, the next generation mobile network is expected to expand to Asia Pacific, Middle East and Latin America in the coming days, according to Counterpoint, bringing 5G smartphones to market for around Rs 150 (approx Rs 11,300). Where 4G smartphones are currently available at this price. According to the company, if the price of low-end 5G chipsets comes down to around Rs 20 (around Rs 1,500), then very few 5G smartphones will be seen in the market. Needless to say, if this indeed happens, 5G smartphone sales will set many new records in the future like last January.
